Born in the city of Hama, 200 km north of Damascus.

First professional drawing appeared on the front page of Al-Lyam (The
Days). Ali Farzat was fourteen years old.
1969
Began drawing caricatures for Al-Thawra (The Revolution).
1970
Began studies in drawing in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus
University.
1973
Left Damascus University during his third year.
1973
Married Ayda Ansari of Damascus. They had two sons and two daughters.
1980
First prize. Intergraphic International Festival, Berlin, Germany.
1980
Caricatures began to appear in Le Monde as well as other
international newspapers.
1980
First prize at the first Caricature Festival of Damascus.

First prize at the second Caricature
festival of Damascus.
1984
Animated anti-air pollution / litter commercial for Qatari television.

Exhibit, Syrian Cultural Center in Moscow.

Third prize at the Capravo International Festival, Bulgaria.

First prize for a caricature at the Sofia International Festival,
Bulgaria.
1989
Exhibit L’Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, France. (Received a death
threat in connection with this exhibit. Banned from Iraq, Jordan, and
Libya because of one cartoon in this exhibit.)
1990
Began work for Tishreen, one of Syria’s state-owned daily
newspapers.

Gold medal for the Best Arab caricaturist, awarded by the Middle Eastern
Press Establishment.

Gold medal for the Best Arab caricaturist, awarded by the Middle Eastern

One of his drawings appeared in the Saudi Arabian newspaper, Al-Sharq
Al-Awsat (The Middle East).

Selected as one of the five best caricaturists in the world, Morg,

Publisher of Ad-Domari (The Lamplighter), the first independent
newspaper in Syria since 1963.
