From Ann W. in Santa Barbara: "I loved the one about The Barking Dog." Paul, Belmont, CA: "I think my favorite story is Elizabeth Who Disappeared, largely because of the essential goodness of everyone involved. In fact that marks just about all the stories. It is not as though nothing nasty ever happens, but one understands how, and everyone is basically a good, well-motivated person, some of whom, like the men who try to circumcize Stephen in "North of Nairobi" haven't a clue. Of all the people in the book, I found Elizabeth the most charming and memorable, perhaps because she was so vulnerable, innocent, willing, and in the long run, responsive to change and growth. The narrator of that story is a genuinely good person, and Elizabeth is lucky to have stowed away with him. I have the feeling that, like it or not, each one is the genuine love of the other's life and that they will never get a better one." Dan Watkins, Sebastapol, CA: "Laban and Murugi. Excellent! This is my favorite story. What does friendship mean to an African? Especially in a master-servant relationship. Americans do want to be liked by everybody, dont they?" Missy Ford, Morro Bay, CA: "Lenoir is probably my favorite. Ive known people like Lenoir: malcontents you want to befriend but who never let you get close. You cant help wondering whats going on inside their heads, you feel sorry for them, and finally get exasperated as hell at them." Julie Stokol, San Francisco: "My favorite story was Equateur. I'm not usually much for description but you made that river come alive! It was a wonderful piece!!" Paul Robinson, Los Angeles: Laban and Murugi. Kate Zarski, Seattle: Waiting for the Mwami. I loved hearing the thoughts of the Mwami of Kabare. It gave me such an insight into the attitudes of a person from a completely different culture with a completely different social position (i.e., absolute ruler). Scott Davis, Seattle: "Madagascar is probably the best story in the book, the most subtle." MaryPat in Westerville, Ohio: "My favorite stories, a tie! At the Edge of the Jungle: an Introduction and Africa, Africa! But running a close second was Dr. Kleckner."
