I first saw Pleasant Gehman at a poetry reading at Beyond Baroque in Venice, California. She was wearing patched jeans and silver bracelets about a foot deep, and she appeared to be having way more fun than I was. I purchased her books partly because I loved the vividness of the style and the quirkiness of the content, and partly because I thought I'd found a good role model. Cathryn Pisarski, Editor of Cune MagazineThis book is described as "Poetry and writings about life as seen by the girl floating face down in the martini glass. Princess of Hollywood is more hardcore dysfunction, decadence, cynicism and sinfulness from Hollywood's baddest bad girl." "Her writing is mostly about hope in the face of despair, with L.A. as the constant backdroppeopled by whores, bag-ladies, transvestites and street people a dizzy binge of candid observations." Poetry Flash Gehman is an internationally published music writer, belly dancer and playwright. She is also a founding member of The Ringling Sisters, an L.A. based poetry and music group. The following is an excerpt from Princess of Hollywood. |

EARTHQUAKE DENIAL You know you're suffering from a full-blown case of Earthquake Denial when just a few short months after the 6.8 disaster your earthquake kit is lacking such essentials as bottled water, blankets and a can-opener but is well-stocked with things like black cake eyeliner, red matte lipstick and disposable contact lenses as well as a baggie full of magic mushrooms wrapped in Christmas paper Your flashlight is nearby but inoperable: last week you removed its batteries and used them to replace the dead ones in your vibrator |
Incommunicado Press is out to subvert the minds and wallets of millions of
unsuspecting young readers. How do they do it? With an army of literary terrorists:
underground urban novelists, punk rock ranters, white trash debutantes, language
deconstructivists, techno-eavesdroppers, trip-hop hipsters and anti-culture clashers.
