Gems: Books that inspire |
Still Life with Woodpecker is sort of a love story that takes place inside a pack of Camel cigarettes. It reveals the purpose of the moon, explains the difference between criminals and outlaws, examines the conflict between social activism and romantic individualism, and paints a portrait of contemporary society that include powerful Arabs, exiled royalty and pregnant cheerleaders. It also deals with the problem of redheads. Tom Robbins, one of my very favorite authors, writes a wild, quirky, vibrant and incredibly fun novel. He also has a knack for creating twists of plot that, after the initial surprise, leave one with the feeling that this was the inevitable outcome of this particular combination of character, time and place. I highly recommend all of his books in general and Still Life with Woodpecker in particular. Cathryn Pisarski, Editor of Cune Magazine The following excerpt is from chapter 2 of Phase I. |
