Storm Run
by Libby Riddles

Published by Sasquatch Books

In 1985, Libby Riddles became the first woman to win the 1100 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Gnome.  In this slim volume, geared for grades 5-7, she tells the story of her move to Alaska at age 16, of the events that led her to take up sled dog racing, and of the fateful race in which she braved a killer storm on the Arctic ice and emerged victorious.
An interesting and inspiring story, Storm Run brings to life Libby's wonderful canine companions, as well as the humans who helped her out.  Ultimately, the book is very heartwarming in spite of the frozen world in which it takes place.  It is also filled with illustrations by Shannon Cartwright.

The following is an excerpt from Storm Run,
"...In a daze, I watched myself, not quite believing as my own feet took me around in the snow, getting ready to head out into the storm.  I collected my dry gear and booted up all 56 paws.  Another musher pulled in, and he shook his head in disbelief. This made me feel a little stubborn, and helped to keep my feet moving.
The dogs seemed to think that if I was willing to go, so were they.  I never doubted that they could make it.  If anyone was the weak link in this chain, it was me.  I pulled the hook.  "Okay gang.  Let's go."  They shook the snow off and we started out of the village."
