Woe is I,
A Grammarphobe's
Guide to better English
in Plain English

by Patricia T. O'Conner

Susan Isaacs says, "Wow!   Who would have thought that you could have such a delicious time with a grammar book.   Woe is I is great fun."

Garrison Keillor says, "You forget so much about English as you go along being profound in it . . . and children snicker at your grammatical errors.  Woe Is I can save you from that.  I mean, this is, like, a cool book."

Described as a "survival guide for people who want a clear, simple, elegant introduction to good usage," this book is filled with entertaining and helpful advice on coping with confusing grammatical issues.

From "The ics Files" in the chapter "Plurals Before Swine,"
Figuring out the mathematics of a noun can be tricky. Take the word mathematics. Is it singular or plural? And what about all those other words ending in icseconomics, ethics, optics, politics, and so on? Fortunately, it doesn’t take a Ph.D. in mathematics to solve this puzzle.
If you’re using an ics word in a general way (as a branch of study, say), it’s singular. If you’re using an ics word in a particular way (as someone’s set of beliefs, for example), it’s plural.

"Politics stinks," said Sonny.
"Sonny’s politics stink," said Gopher.
