Real World Scanning and Halftones
by David Blatner and Steve Roth

Reviewed by Scott C. Davis

Blatner and Roth enter the Bermuda triangle of pre-press production with notable panache and good spirits. They provide an informative rehearsal of halftone theory and practice (everything from spot variation to frequency-modulated screening) which gives the newcomer the tools to understand why and how printed material turns out the way it does. Part 2 goes into the fine points of scanning, again working from theory to practice (Anatomy of a Bitmap to Getting Great Grays). Part 3 gives a brief but important explanation of PostScript as it applies to halftones. Part 4 puts earlier comments into the context of actual DTP programs such as Photoshop, PageMaker and Illustrator.
I’ve read Real World Scanning and Halftones twice and will still have more to learn on the third read through. An impressive piece of work.
