This book is a classic in the popular literature of type. It is a must-read for all lay persons who are finding themselves committing graphic design, thanks to their capable DTP software. The authors give a feel for the history and the depth of culture behind typefaces. And they show how typefaces can convey visual meaning with a precision and economy that can’t be achieved by any other means. I highly recommend this very fine book. At the same time, as a word person, I can’t help but suggest that the book would be stronger if the mysterious story referred to in the title were explained (rather than hashed) in the book.
