Imps: technology tune-ups

Working with Words & Pictures
by Lori Siebert & Mary Cropper
North Light Books

Reviewed by Scott C. Davis

Siebert and Cropper consider the parts of a printed piece having to do with words (Headlines, Subheads, Body Copy, Captions, etc.) and elucidate the fine points of working effectively in each area.  They also consider graphics (type as art, information graphics, rules, boxes, borders, clip art, photos).  We learn what makes a graphic effective, what to avoid, and tips on working with an illustrator.  The last half of the book is devoted to ways that words and pictures can be combined to create sharp and attractive pages.  This book is clear, to the point, and it is distinguished by many fine examples of the graphic designers’ art.
