"award-winning

| I attended the November 15, 1999 Spoken Interludes and was truly impressed by the eclectic representation of work that night. The evening started with award-winning writer Lisa See reading from the Epilogue of her new book, The Interior. This excerpt was an unusual choice, but nevertheless an interesting one. Founder DeLauné Michel was next with a short story about the similarity between a relationship and boxing, called The Rhythm of the Wait, and writer Ozzie Cheek followed with a short story called A Man Like Gary Cooper. The highlight of the evening was when writer-actor-humorist Harry Shearer read from his very funny work-in-progress Not Enough Indians. Ms. Michel has done Los Angeles a huge service in providing these evenings. It is a chance to hear the work of established writers as well as up-and-comers in a comfortable and supportive setting, and a way of providing a sense of community among the writers and the audience. Past performers have included Anne Beatts, Eve Babitz, Margaret Cho, Bernard Cooper, Nora Dunn, Boyd Gaines, Michael Lally, Esmeralda Santiago, Hubert Selby, Jr., and Jerry Stahl, just to name a few. Spoken Interludes takes place once a month at Le Colonial restaurant, located at 8783 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles. The cost of the evening is $20.00 at the door, reservations are recommended and can made by calling the Hotline (323) 957-4688 or visiting the website at www.SpokenInterludes.com. |
